If you love food and the joy that comes
by making others happy then the Food Service Industry
could be
just the career path you're looking for! The Culinary Arts is
one of the fastest growing employment areas in the nation.
The demand
for trained, qualified people is extremely high.
Facts:
- More than 4 out of 10 adults have
worked in the restaurant industry at some time during their
lives and 27 percent of adults got their first job experience
in a restaurant.
- Hospitality and tourism are two of the
world’s leading industries, and are the largest retail
employers in the U.S. with annual expenditures of more
than 2 trillion dollars.
- The number of people employed by this
industry in the U.S. alone currently totals over 10 million
people, or one in 12 workers, making it the nation's largest
employer outside of government. The U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics predicts this figure to rise to 12.4 million by
2005.
- Industry professionals and owners indicate that the biggest
challenge facing the industry is finding educated, competent,
and well-trained management personnel to handle this growth.
- The number of foodservice managers is projected to increase
11% from 2005 to 2015.
- More than three out of five foodservice managers have annual
household incomes of $50,000 or more.
"Job openings for chefs, cooks, and other kitchen workers
are expected to be plentiful through the year 2005" (Career
Advisor). Much of this job growth will result from a high rate
of turnover. An increase in restaurant industry sales will
contribute to this growth.
